What to AVOID If You Have Broad Shoulders - For Women

A key point to remember when putting together an outfit no matter what your body type is, is balance. Through balancing your proportions with your clothing, you’ll enhance your head-to-toe look. Together with the right colour palette, your outfit will be cohesive, and you’ll always look “put together”.

Here are some common mistakes to avoid and tweak if you have broad shoulders, and want to look like you’re wearing your outfit, and NOT like your outfit is wearing you.

Structured Blazers

Structured blazers have hard lines, emphasizing the width of your shoulders. If you’re a huge fan of the structured blazer, options that are collar-less OR have longer lapels that taper will bring the focus to the mid-line of your body, and away from your shoulders. Also look for unstructured blazer options or “kimono” style layers with drapier sleeves – they will de-emphasize your broad shoulders.

Shoulder Pads

Shoulder pads or shoulder detailing like ruffles or puffy sleeves are going to bring major focus to your shoulders. Balance these details with a deep neckline, or by adding volume to your lower half. Peplum style tops, and printed or light coloured bottoms are great options.

Boat Neck Tops

Boat Neck tops run along your shoulder line, emphasizing their “broad-ness”. Instead, try v-neck or scoop neck options that will bring the focus inward and emphasize the length of your torso as opposed to the width of your shoulders. Dolman style tops will also add length to your torso.

Strapless & Off-The-Shoulder Styles

Similar to shoulder pads, strapless and off-the-shoulder options are going to bring immediate focus to the width of your shoulders. Add volume to the bottom half of your body with lighter colors or a full skirt, or look for halter or one shoulder options – they will break up your shoulder line, making them appear less broad, and more proportionate to the rest of your body.
